The National Council for History Education promotes the study of history in schools as well as informally in society. Its members include academic historians, elementary and secondary school teachers, education policy makers, and museum employees. The organization conducts teacher education programs and provides assistance to states and school districts in revising their history programs. The council’s publications include the monthly newsletter History Matters!
